The Rectangle Skirt is a versatile, beginner-friendly pattern built entirely from rectangles. At its core, this design embraces the simplicity of straight lines, yet the finished result feels polished and endlessly wearable. By starting with basic rectangular panels, the Rectangle Skirt offers a streamlined approach to sewing that is approachable for beginners while leaving plenty of space for experienced makers to experiment with fabric, styling, and details.

With its clean H-line silhouette, the Rectangle Skirt balances structure and comfort. The full elastic waistband ensures this skirt is easy to fit and even easier to wear, while also allowing for it to be rotated. Although the vent is designed to sit at the front, you can turn the skirt so that the opening is at the back or even the side for an entirely different look. This substantial flexibility makes the Rectangle Skirt a uniquely adaptable addition to your handmade wardrobe.

The Rectangle Skirt offers two views and two lengths to suit different preferences and occasions.

View A features a hidden overlapping vent, adding subtle walking ease and a clean, polished look.

View B replaces the solid front panel with a pleated front section, giving it a slightly more casual feel while still maintaining structure. Although it doesn’t include a vent, the pleats allow for comfortable movement and a relaxed silhouette.

The pattern also offers two distinct lengths:

Office Length, which gently covers the knees for a polished, everyday look, and

Midi Length, which falls mid-calf for an elegant, modern silhouette.

Both versions share the same simple construction and timeless design, letting you customise the skirt to your personal style.

Because the skirt is composed of simple rectangles and has no lining, fabric choice plays a central role in shaping its personality. A structured fabric will highlight its clean, pencil-like lines, while a softer fabric will create a more relaxed, casual look. Even stable knits are possible, giving you a comfortable knit-skirt variation.

Whether you’re sewing your very first skirt or looking for a simple yet adaptable pattern to revisit again and again, the Rectangle Skirt is designed to bring ease, versatility, and timeless style into your sewing journey.

SUGGESTED FABRIC

The Rectangle Skirt works best in medium-weight woven fabrics that press well and hold their shape.

View A (Hidden Vent) suits structured fabrics like cotton twill, canvas, denim, or medium-heavy linen for a clean, polished silhouette. Washed linen or cotton-linen blends (180–220 gsm) offer softer structure, and stable knits like ponte or heavy jersey give a modern variation. Wool or heavier cotton blends work well for cooler seasons. Avoid very thick, spongy, or sheer fabrics.

View B (Pleated Panel) pairs nicely with light- to medium-weight wovens that hold pleats yet move softly—such as cotton poplin, lightweight twill, linen, chambray, or cotton sateen. Textured or patterned wovens like jacquard or herringbone add interest. Wool or brushed cotton blends are ideal for fall and winter. Avoid stretchy, overly stiff, or sheer fabrics that distort pleats.

PREPARATION

Pre-wash and dry all your fabrics as this will prevent your garment from shrinking. We recommend you read the instructions thoroughly before sewing.

At Home (A4/Letter) :

When printing the pattern at home, we offer two versions: 

1. Standard Version (30 pages + 25 pages) – Includes all pattern pieces with notches clearly marked. The first file contains all skirt pieces, and the second file includes the Front Pleat Panel.

2. Paper-Saving Option – Provides all measurements instead of full pattern pieces, allowing you to draft directly on your fabric or paper. This option saves paper and resources but does not include printed notches. If you’re using the Paper-Saving Option but need to reference pleat notches for View B, print Pages 1–5 of the Front Pleat Panel file. This lets you mark the notch positions without printing the full 25-page file.

For your convenience, layer options for each size are included in the pattern, allowing you to print your specific size only. Please ensure that your printer settings are adjusted to a scale of 100% or set to ‘Actual Size’ for accurate printing.

When printing, set the page orientation to Automatic or Landscape. The pattern is drafted in landscape format.

A0 (Copy Shop) Option / Projector Option

We offer both A0 (Copy Shop) and Projector options. You can find the files in their respective folders. For your convenience, layer options for each size are included in the pattern.
