The Asymmetric Ruffle Skirt is a modern and poetic take on a wardrobe staple, designed for makers seeking an effortless silhouette infused with playful movement. Bringing together the clean lines of an everyday A-line cut with the dynamic rhythm of an angled hem with ruffles, this skirt reinterprets classic tiered details into something fresh and wearable with a distinctly structured fluidity.

What sets this pattern apart is its clever play on panel orientation, offering two captivating silhouettes from a deceptively simple foundation:

View A (Dynamic Wave): By cutting identical trapezoid panels for the front and back, the hemline flows in opposing directions across the body. The seam dips and rises from side to side, creating a spiraling, high-low sculptural line that feels artistic, fluid, and wonderfully unconventional.

View B (Classic Angle): By cutting mirrored panels, the asymmetrical line runs harmoniously from one side to the other—starting just past the knee on one side and tapering down into an elegant lower-calf sweep on the opposite side. It offers a sleek, intentionally unbalanced hemline that feels understated yet refined.

Both views are anchored by a gathered rectangular ruffle, perfectly balanced given the gentle 1.4x ratio. This calculated fullness ensures the hem delivers rich, organic movement without adding unnecessary bulk at the seam.

SUGGESTED FABRIC

Since the Asymmetric Ruffle Skirt pairs a relaxed A-line body with a gentle 1.4x gathered ruffle, the drape and weight of your fabric will directly define whether the silhouette falls softly or holds a buoyant structured form. 

Choose lightweight to mid-weight fabrics so the gathered seam and wide elastic waistband remain comfortable without adding unnecessary bulk.

Important Note for View A: Because View A features opposing high-low hems, the longer back ruffle dips lower and its wrong side will naturally peek through from the front as you move. For this view, we strongly recommend choosing yarn-dyed, double-sided, or solid textiles where the right and wrong sides look identical.

Fabrics to Avoid: Stiff, crisp, or heavy fabrics (such as crisp cotton poplin, cotton oxford, heavy linen, twill, or structured canvas). These will cause the A-line body to flare out rigidly and the ruffles to puff out, creating unintended volume.

PREPARATION

Pre-wash and dry all your fabrics as this will prevent your garment from shrinking. We recommend you read the instructions thoroughly before sewing.

PATTERN PRINTING (At Home (A4/Letter) / Copy Shop (A0) / Projector)

At Home (A4/Letter) :

When printing the pattern at home, we offer two versions to suit your workflow:

Standard Version (23 pages / 27 pages for 2XL–3XL) – Includes all pattern pieces for a traditional print-and-tape experience.

Paper-Saving Version (16 pages / 19 pages for 2XL–3XL) – Saves paper and ink by including only the shaped SKIRT and POCKET panels. You can easily cut the rectangular WAISTBAND and RUFFLE panels directly from your fabric using the measurements chart.

(Note: Due to the pattern dimensions, sizes 2XL–3XL are provided in a separate file.)

For your convenience, layer options for each size are included in the pattern. Please ensure that your printer settings are adjusted to a scale of 100% or set to ‘Actual Size’ for accurate printing.

A0 (Copy Shop) Option / Projector Option

The A0 pattern file is formatted for copy shop printing. It consists of two pages: page 1 contains the SKIRT and POCKET pieces, and page 2 contains the WAISTBAND and RUFFLE pieces. For your convenience, the file includes layer options for each size.

To reduce printing costs, you may print page 1 only and use the paper-saving layout for the remaining pieces.
