A beginner sewist can sew this, too!

I'd adopted but my grandmother is Korean and in the past few years I've been learning more about my heritage - including hanbok and sewing techniques. My previous sewing experience has largely been quilting and COVID masks. I have a modern hanbok dress from LEESLE that I love wearing and get tons of comments on so sewing my own has been a long-time goal. Before beginning the dress I watched the sew along several times to familiarize myself with the pattern/steps and also kept it nearby (on pause) while I worked. It was very comforting and meaningful sewing alongside someone who could be a sister/auntie learning to craft a hanbok, especially as an adoptee since my matrilineal connections who would typically have taught me such tasks are severed. I also kept my LEESLE hanbok dress nearby for reference since it is a similar style. I adapted the ties to match that dress, which includes an additional, exterior upper tie which I've gotten used to. From start to finish including ironing and cutting out the pattern it took about 15 hours (again, I'm a beginner). Now that I've completed the pattern once a second would be much easier, especially since I have a cut template. :) Certainly there were a number of seam-pulling moments - too. Thank goodness for seam pullers! Thank you for creating such a simple, easy-to-follow design (with sew along!!!) that provides a way for me to connect with my culture and increase my sewing skillset.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal journey and experience with sewing the hanbok. It's truly heartwarming to hear how this project has helped you connect with your Korean heritage. Congratulations on completing the dress, and I'm thrilled to know it holds such special meaning for you. x
