The Tie Dress epitomizes versatility and style by cleverly blending the ubiquitous appeal of customizable ties with the graceful silhouette of a classic dress. Featuring ties at the waist, this garment offers multiple closure options.

Moreover, the reversible neckline adds another dimension of adaptability, offering the choice between a subtle boat neck or a flattering v-neck, catering to a multitude of preferences and occasions.

Embodying a blend of charm and sophistication, this dress exudes cuteness, romance, and elegance. With short sleeves, it radiates a playful charm, while elbow-length sleeves evoke a sense of romance.

With the addition of lining, sewing this dress becomes an accessible project, even for beginners. The step-by-step sewalong video ensures that every aspect, including potentially challenging features like the inseam pockets, is demystified. If you’re new to sewing, tackling inseam pockets might seem daunting, but rest assured, you can approach them at your own pace. However, if you’re not ready to tackle inseam pockets just yet, feel free to skip this optional step.

In the sewalong video, I guide you through each step, ensuring that your sewing experience is therapeutic rather than overwhelming. Your sewing journey should be enjoyable and rewarding, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

SUGGESTED FABRIC

For the Tie Dress, I would suggest using fabrics that drape well and offer comfort, as they will enhance the flow and movement of the garment. Here are some fabric options to consider:

  1. Linen
  2. Double Gauze
  3. Lightweight Cotton
  4. Rayon
  5. Crepe
  6. Silk

The fabrics I used for my Tie Dresses
1. Cotton Double Gauze - Shark/Ocean Windowpane
2. Ethereal Grid Linen - Mint Fog
3. Cotton Lawn - Acorn
4. Cotton Double Gauze - Midnight/Denim Gingham

PREPARATION

Pre-wash and dry all your fabrics as this will prevent your garment from shrinking. We recommend you read the instructions thoroughly before sewing.

PATTERN PRINTING (At Home (A4/Letter) / Copy Shop (A0) / Projector)

At Home (A4/Letter) :

When it comes to printing the pattern at home, we offer two versions.

The first is a standard version that is 36 pages and includes all pattern pieces. The second option is 20 pages, saving you paper and ink. This option provides the measurements for the Side Panel, Sleeves and Ties, rather than pattern pieces. Select the option that works best for you.

For your convenience, layer options for each size are included in the pattern. Please ensure that your printer settings are adjusted to a scale of 100% or set to ‘Actual Size’ for accurate printing.

A0 (Copy Shop) Option / Projector Option

We offer both A0 (Copy Shop) and Projector options. You can find the files in their respective folders. For your convenience, layer options for each size are included in the pattern.

Very enjoyable and versatile

The dress was a real joy to make. Simple yet felt really clean and structured. Love the instructional video on YouTube, it really helped.

I made it in a linen that maybe wasn't the best choice in terms of weight (250Gram/m²) and color. Unfortunately it looks a lot like a hospital gown but that's on me. With this fit maybe avoid light blue altogether.

I really want to do it again in a more light weight linen or a viscose blend and maybe a patchwork version!
Really love the concept of having multiple options for wearing it and love the pockets, although I think they were pretty bulky in this kind of fabric so I may skip them next time.

Overall a really lovely pattern, very versatile. Not the best results in the end, but again, probably on me.

An easy sew with a big payoff

This pattern is straightforward to cut, simple to assemble and highly customisable if you want to make modifications as you go. The fact that it can be worn two ways (V-neck or scoop neck) with versatile ties means you get a lot of wardrobe mileage out of one dress. The accompanying YouTube video is excellent, making the whole process entirely beginner-friendly. Highly recommended - I'll definitely be making more!

Pick the right fabric and size

I made the dress in a size 10 and chose some fabric that I came across for free. It was an embroidered raw silk. I lined it with some scrap silk that I had laying about. Unfortunately, it was too large and as the material was somewhat heavy, it didn’t tie well. I ended up giving it to a friend of mine who is quite tall and larger than I am so she will wear it. I did purchase some pricey linen to make one for myself. The first one was a test. I will definitely size down and see how the next one turns out.

Great pattern - flattering and fun sew

Made this for my second ever clothing item and with the sew along video found the process reasonably straightforward.

I loved the way the dress turned out but actually loved even more how it looked as a top before I added the skirt - will probably make one hacked into a top next!!
